The two ice wells are circular, underground brick lined wells about 30 feet in diameter. Originally some 40 feet deep, the muddy floor is about 20 feet below the level of the ground floor. The wells are dark and atmospheric. Access is via metal ladders. Heavy equipment can only be lowered on ropes. The wells have a dungeon-like atmosphere and conditions are damp.
Stills photography is difficult because of the lighting conditions and the scale of the wells which is huge. The wells could be used in drama where characters are in dark damp underground conditions. They are a uniquely preserved piece of Victorian engineering and their main interest is historical.
