Ice House
Many of the issues related to the structure arise from the humid conditions and these are cause by the long-term leakage of canal water from the adjoining basin. There is believed to be water passing through the walll of the basin and it is also thought that past building works, possibly dating back decades, have caused damage to the puddled clay lining behind the brick wall. We are working with the Canal and River Trust to find solutions to seal up the canal so that is ceases to leak into the basement of the museum. Preventing further water ingress is strategically important to the museum because it underpins not only the future preservation of the building but also the options for opening the wells to public access in the future.
