12. Regent's Canal

History and Archive Film

Regent's Canal Horse, and boatman

The Regent's Canal, opened throughout in 1820, is our "home" canal running past the end of the basin beside which the museum is situated. We therefore tell the story of this canal in some detail with exhibition panels and the films "Barging Through London" and "The Barge Fellows". These films were made in the 1920s and are shown on video. There are also two other archive films related to the topics on the first floor. We have a number of Regent's Canal artifacts on view along with the story of its construction.

We hope you will have enjoyed the virtual tour but, as is true of any museum, there is no substitute for visiting in person. If you have looked through the images in the tour you will have had a small taste of what there is to see. For information about visiting please see our visitor information section
